She’ll tell you I didn’t, but I had a lot to live up to. My sister threw me the most beautiful baby shower when I was pregnant with Ada. It was seriously like pinterest exploded in the form of my baby shower. My first thought when she told me she was pregnant, after the excitement of course, was how in the world could I ever throw her a shower that even came close in comparison to the one she threw me. She kept telling me I didn’t have to put on an elaborate party, that she knew it was right in the middle of wedding season after I’d just moved, but I ignored her. She deserved the best, and the best was what I was going to attempt to give her. If you haven’t read her story and why she deserved the best baby shower ever, please take a moment to read it here, it’ll change your life.
A little backstory on my sister: as a child, she was obsessed with the song Baby Beluga by Raffi. Obsessed may be an understatement. She played it over and over again for years. Needless to say, choosing a theme for her shower was easy. She had to have a whale themed baby shower! With the help of our two older sisters, our mom, one of her good friends, and a kick butt shared google doc, we got to work on making this the best whale themed baby shower you’ve ever seen!
We went over the top with whale puns, cheesy signs, and all things whale we could think of! We had whaley good water, a whale watermelon, whale-come sign, we’re whaley glad you came, whale done goodie bags for the game winners, and a beluga whale quilt handmade by our mom. We played sink or swim with life preserver candies, and baby shower jeopardy complete with a few beluga whale questions included! We helped name the baby since they’re semi-stuck on what to name him, wrote funny notes for those midnight diaper changes, and we may or may not have serenaded her with Raffi. We had a whale of a time! : )
My sister was so spoiled, as she should be, with all the beautiful gifts and love from her friends. She is the only person I know who has a 95% turn out for their baby shower. We joked that when you’ve gone through what she’s gone through this year, everyone wants to come celebrate the healthy pregnancy! But seriously, she had that turnout because she’s loved. So amazingly loved and supported by the people who surround her. We are all so happy for her. That’s probably why I cried my way through her whole shower. I was a sobbing, blubbering mess every time I tried to say something, but that’s nothing new for me. I absolutely loved seeing her get loved on. My heart was just so happy.
To my little sister, be proud, I made it through writing this post without crying! xoxo I love you so much. I love that little boy growing inside you more than I have words to say, and can’t wait to see you step into the role of mom. If you’re half the mom that you are an aunt to Ada, you’re going to be an amazing one! That little boy doesn’t know how lucky he is to have you.
To my older sisters, mom, and Jenna, THANK YOU for helping me give Carter this shower! Thank you for putting up with my endless emails, thoughts, difficult ideas, and for bringing this vision to life. I could not have done it without you!!! And Jenna, I’m impressed you stuck around after seeing the behind the scenes craziness and obsession to detailed-ness that is my family, you are the best!
Thanks to Sugar Euphoria for making such a lovely & delicious cake for us!!
