The Dunlaps Take Charleston

Our Life

Wedding photographers vacation in Charleston, SC.

Is the title too extreme for a Friday morning? Maybe. Sorry about that. In case you haven’t yet, it’s time to WAKE UP! One more day until Saturday! But who’s counting? Actually, we are…we’re counting down the weekends we have open before wedding season. If there’s one downside to our jobs that’s it. Not because we don’t get a weekend, but because we don’t get time off when our family and friends have time off. If you want to see us during wedding season, plan for a weeknight, or plan to wait until winter : ) Such is our life.

Since we’re on the countdown, we’re trying to take advantage of as many weekend adventures as we can! Kyle’s day job takes him all up and down the east coast and sometimes out to the midwest. Last week he had a business trip to Charleston, SC, so Ada & I tagged along. Because we were going to be car-less while he was away working, we decided to stay in town in a tiny little B & B that fell into his travel budget. I’ll admit, we were slightly nervous because we’ve only ever stayed at chain hotels, but we LOVED it! We’ve been telling everyone about our cute little Elliot House Inn, and how you have to stay there! They brought us breakfast to our room daily, and we even had a real metal key. No joke. We could walk everywhere from there too! We walked the 2.5 blocks to the market and bought ourselves some goodies, and then walked the 2.5 blocks the other direction to The Battery once Kyle got off work, past Rainbow Row and into the private alleyways to explore the city. It was warm and lovely. Then the cold snap set in, and we tried touring Isle of Palms, but Ada couldn’t take the wind on the beach. She quickly told us she wasn’t happy. Even the negative expressions are cute : )

The weekend didn’t end there though. We were already in SC, so we decided to drive up to my dad’s beach house in Pawley’s Island and stay there for the rest of the weekend. On the drive, Kyle told me he had a surprise for me and pulled into this gorgeous southern plantation! If anyone wants to hire us for their Hopsewee Plantation wedding, we would love you forever! Please, and thank you.

We’ve spent a lot of time in Pawleys Island over the years, but have never really explored the area beyond the island. We decided to fix that this time, and explore Atalaya Castle and Huntington Beach. We can’t so much call it a castle, as much as a creepy 1930’s cinderblock house, but the tour was fascinating, and it would definitely make for a unique wedding venue! Nonetheless, we enjoyed the history and imagining how people could live in a place so stark cold feeling.

Sunday bright and early (and freezing), we packed up, headed home, and ended our adventure! Nothing will bring you closer than a little family getaway. : )
